Worthy Brothers, often I am asked what is the key to getting catholic men to join the Knights of
Columbus. My response to this question is this: I truly believe that what the Knights have to
offer is essential to the church and the community we serve. Often, that is followed with “How
so?” Before I address the ‘how so’ question, I want to emphasize the importance of believing in
the mission of the Knights. If you believe in the mission, it is easier to share that mission with
others. The mission of the Knights of Columbus is to empower men to live their lives through
works of charity, unity, and fraternity, while supporting the Catholic church and its communities.
This mission is powerful and opens the door to inviting conversation. It is this self reflection on
mission that is the foundation for being prepared to invite men into our order.
The ‘how so’ to what the Knights have to offer starts with helping men in their formation as they
deepen their relationship with God, priests, church and community. Now, you might want to
start with making an honest attempt to get to know the person you are inviting into your council.
My approach is to invite the prospect out for a meal. This is where the magic happens. Ask the
Grand Knight to join you as you get to know the prospect and give him information about your
council. What we do as Knights, and how we do it, is enticing. Serving our church through
deeds of service to our neighbors is exciting and fun. Food drives, blood drives, helping the less
fortunate, caring for individuals with disabilities, supporting prolife causes are all noble initiatives
that appeal to anyone who wants to help his community.
Let’s ask men to join our order because we believe that by doing so they will become better
men, better practicing Catholics and in formation to discipleship.
